Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of his "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
