An Historic Event when Rosenior Overcomes Boundaries

"Rosenior represents a top coach that understands the game back to front, and that's what matters most.

"However, in my role as Chelsea's pioneering black player, it would be dishonest if I said this news doesn't move me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by the former Chelsea winger, who made his groundbreaking debut for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, the club appointed RC Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next head coach following the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also controls the London club.

Statistics show only 12 black managers – excluding individuals holding interim positions – in England's top flight since it began 34 in the past.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is that he was raised and played not far from here, he understands the local fans," added Canoville.

"When kids observe a figure like Rosenior in charge of the team they support, someone who looks like them, who's from their ends, from a household that fights for what's right… it is profound demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"So yes, this represents a huge moment for the club, for the capital, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, provide him with what he needs, and allow him to do his work."

What Do the Statistics Indicate?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became Chelsea head coach in 1996 thereby becoming the top flight's inaugural African heritage manager.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering English black boss in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo is the sole additional present top flight gaffer of colour.

The scarcity of managers of colour throughout the English game corresponds with a lack of diversity at executive level.

As per a BFP 2023 report, 43% of top-flight players come from African or Caribbean heritage.

Yet, analysis from the equality organization revealed only 3.2 percent of executive and leadership positions across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Regarding first-team coaching positions, based on figures provided by 11 clubs, the percentage stands at two percent.

For all coaching positions – encompassing head coaches – from the same 11 clubs, the figure is 5%.

"He has undoubtedly made history in terms of him being announced as Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we want to see more of that," said Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged there is loads of talent present within ethnic minority communities... they desire the opportunity to show their capabilities. We need to continue to striving to break those barriers down."

Additionally, the new appointee will become one of only four permanent British head coaches currently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that lags behind the continent's other big five divisions in terms of homegrown managers.

16 of the 20 first division coaches in Italy are from Italy, Eleven of the 20 are Spanish, Twelve in the Bundesliga in Germany and 10 in Ligue 1 in France.

The present Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt every aspiring British managers with a youth development pedigree are, in some way regardless of allegiance, supporting Liam.

"It's truly inspirational for young English coaches in the system to see an individual get that job with his background and everyone hopes he will be really well."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is due to ability'

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, played for clubs such as West London clubs, the Hammers as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career culminating in a five-month spell in charge of then-League One side Brentford FC back in 2006.

In 2019, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Honours List for services rendered to tackling discrimination in football and wider society.

After Liam retired from playing he pursued a path in management. He began penning articles for a national newspaper, and in one piece he acknowledged the lack of diversity of black coaches. He highlighted that race does not determine coaching skill arguing that opportunities should be given on merit.

He further expressed the view he has often stated: that significant under-representation results in misunderstandings regarding footballers from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In a podcast for a football podcast, he explained how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" or "passionate", noting that he understood the Netherlands international of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to join him in moving from Strasbourg to West London this summer.

In further newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" to hear a coach utter a homophobic slur. He vowed his support for the inclusion initiative and wrote an open letter to the former US President during his first US presidency, condemning his "overt" racism.

Rosenior has since made his name as a manager – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their collaboration at Derby County.

Rosenior said his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract with the Blues.

The Blues boasted the Premier League's first black boss with Gullit and the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.
